The Story

Once upon a time there were Laura and Edwin. They loved each other, but they happened to live on the different sides of a big river. They wanted to see each other, but they didn't have a boat, and the river was too wide to swim. Of course, the river is covered with ice in winter, so they can walk over it, but the winter was so far away! One day Laura couldn't wait any longer, so she decided to go down the river, maybe she would be able to find some kind of transportation.

She walked for quite a while, and finally found a ferry-boat. The ferryman's name was Peter, he said that of course, he will be glad to take Laura over the river as soon as she pays the fare. "Fare? But I can't pay it, I don't have any money," said Laura. "Maybe you have something to trade?" asked Peter. "I don't have anything, all I have is on me," answered Laura. Peter thought for a moment and said, "Well, I can take your dress for the fare, I will sell it on market and get about the same amount of money." "But I don't have anything else to put on!" cried Laura. "I'm sorry, lady, but I don't make you to go. Do whatever you decide."

Crying, Laura went on further down the river. Soon she met a lady, who looked rich. Laura decided to ask her if she could borrow her some money to pay the fare. The rich lady's name was Isabel. When Laura started to tell her about her love with Edwin, about ferryman Peter, Isabel stopped her. "Laura, all you're telling me is very interesting, I believe you, but I won't give you any money. Do you think money is growing on trees? If you want to go to the opposite bank, this is your problem, not mine. Good bye."

Crying more than before, Laura went back to the ferryman Peter, gave him her dress and he took her across the river. Laura thanked him and went up the river to Edwin's place.

At that time a man called Steve was walking by the river. When he saw a beautiful young lady undressed, he just couldn't stop himself. He raped her. A passer-by Oscar saw this from the distance, but he didn't know that Steve was raping Laura, so he decided not to interfere. Soon he met a friend and told him, "Can you imagine what I saw today? Two people were having sex right on the road!"

His friend happened to be Edwin. By Oscar's description he understood that it was Laura, who had sex with a stranger. So, when Laura came, he told her to get out. "But he raped me!" cried Laura. "Just get out, I don't believe you. Look at yourself, where's your dress? I don't want to see you any more!"

In despair Laura ran out to the river and drowned herself.
